The therapist uses a variety of techniques with their hands, thumbs, elbows or forearms to release muscle tension commonly known as ‘knots’. A knot is when muscle fibres become stuck together by waste products in our body such as lactic acid. This can cause the muscle to stop functioning properly, become weak, shortened and could cause a muscle tear.
Massage can help break up this knot and increase blood flow to the area. This enables the tissue to start repairing itself by feeding the area with oxygen and nutrients.
Regular massage can help prevent knots occurring and maintain muscle health. Ideally you shouldn’t wait until you have an injury or pain before receiving a massage.
As soon as you start to feel a niggle/ache for a few days, book yourself an appointment to prevent it getting worse and becoming painful.
During a massage the lymph glands help to eliminate (get rid of) toxins such as stress hormones from your body. When muscles are relaxed again, your body starts to produce and release more endorphins – the good mood chemicals. A regular massage also helps to maintain joint mobility, improve your posture and encourage your body to be more flexible.
