How often should I get a massage?2023-05-15T22:09:00+00:00

This depends on a number of factors such as the current health of your muscles, your posture, work demands, stress levels and your training regime. Some people find it beneficial to receive regular massages and make it part of their weekly schedule, others spread treatments out over a longer period. Once you have experienced your first massage we will be able to decide together what your body needs.

What to expect following a treatment?2023-05-05T12:04:30+00:00

Because we have moved lots of waste products and toxins from your body, you will be asked to drink some water after the treatment to help flush them out of the body and to re-hydrate you. This may make you go to the toilet several times for the rest of the day – please note this is a really good thing. When you get home it is a good idea to drink another few glasses of water to make sure that your body is kept fully hydrated.

If you have had a sports massage there may be a number of natural reactions that can occur after your treatment, these can include:

  • Tenderness around the treated areas (please apply an ice pack for relief if required
  • Increased irritation around the treated area
  • Heat or redness around the treated area (please apply an ice pack for relief if required)
  • Possible bruising if you tend to bruise easily

All of these reactions are quite normal and are part of the body’s healing process. These symptoms usually last between 24 and 72 hours depending on your recovery rate.

What should I do during a massage?2023-05-15T22:09:28+00:00

Make yourself comfortable and relax. I will gently move the relevant body part that I am working on but I may need to ask you to move it into another position; for example if you have your arms resting over the side of the couch, I will ask you to move them beside your body. If you are having a sports massage you may be asked to move/exercise the affected limb during the treatment to get the best results.

During either treatment many people just close their eyes and completely relax, whilst others like to talk during their treatment. This is your massage, so you decide what you wish to do and I will work with you. During a relaxation massage, soothing music will be played to help you unwind and relax.

What should I wear and will I be covered during the treatment?2023-05-05T12:02:30+00:00

Sports Massage – You should dress comfortably in loose fitting clothes. I will need to see the problem area of your body, so if it is a lower limb issue, please wear shorts. If you have an upper body or back problem I will need you to remove your top, but ladies will keep their underwear on.

Relaxation Massage – For a Full Body Massage you will be asked to undress down to your underwear and get onto the couch face down. I will be holding up a large towel between us to screen/protect your privacy and as soon as you lay on the couch the towel will be draped over you.

Back, Neck and Shoulder Massage – you will be asked to remove your top clothing; ladies will keep their underwear on, and to loosen your trousers before getting onto the couch. Again a towel will be used as a screen to protect your privacy.

During your massage you will be properly draped with towels at all times to keep you warm, comfortable and maintain your privacy. Only the area of the body being worked on will be exposed at any time.

Does massage hurt?2023-05-15T22:10:35+00:00

A relaxation treatment will not hurt at all. If you are having a sports massage, generally it does not hurt but sometimes the therapist will find a tense muscle group that needs more pressure and will require special techniques to release the tension.

I will communicate with you at all times during the massage and if deeper pressure is required, I will explain what technique I will use and also teach you how to breath deeply to minimise any potential pain. Should you suffer any pain or discomfort it is short lived and should start to disappear within 60 seconds. Everybody has a different pain threshold so I work very closely with you to make sure that we stay within your limits.

How does a massage help/work?2023-05-05T12:00:52+00:00

The therapist uses a variety of techniques with their hands, thumbs, elbows or forearms to release muscle tension commonly known as ‘knots’. A knot is when muscle fibres become stuck together by waste products in our body such as lactic acid. This can cause the muscle to stop functioning properly, become weak, shortened and could cause a muscle tear.

Massage can help break up this knot and increase blood flow to the area. This enables the tissue to start repairing itself by feeding the area with oxygen and nutrients.

Regular massage can help prevent knots occurring and maintain muscle health. Ideally you shouldn’t wait until you have an injury or pain before receiving a massage.

As soon as you start to feel a niggle/ache for a few days, book yourself an appointment to prevent it getting worse and becoming painful.

During a massage the lymph glands help to eliminate (get rid of) toxins such as stress hormones from your body. When muscles are relaxed again, your body starts to produce and release more endorphins – the good mood chemicals. A regular massage also helps to maintain joint mobility, improve your posture and encourage your body to be more flexible.
